Qualification Upgrade | Certificate IV – CPC to CPC
Course Overview
Already hold a Certificate IV qualification in the construction industry and need to upgrade to the latest training package?
The Fresh Start Education Certificate IV Upgrade Pathway is designed for individuals who have completed a superseded qualification and require an update to meet current industry standards, practices, and licensing requirements.
This pathway enables you to transition from your existing qualification to the current version by completing any required gap training and assessment.
Upon successful completion, you will be awarded the latest nationally recognised qualification in your trade area, which may support eligibility to apply for licensing or meet industry requirements.
This upgrade ensures your skills and knowledge align with current industry expectations, including updated safety standards, materials, techniques, and compliance requirements.
In Queensland, licensing outcomes may require completion of additional units or courses (such as a QBCC Managerial Course), depending on your trade. Licensing requirements are subject to change. For current information, please contact the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) or Fresh Start Education on 1300 980 999 or enrolments@freshstart.edu.au
To enrol in a Certificate IV upgrade pathway, students must:
Hold a superseded Certificate IV qualification in a relevant construction trade (e.g. CPC qualifications or equivalent)
Provide a copy of their qualification and/or statement of attainment
Demonstrate an appropriate level of Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) skills to successfully complete any gap training or assessment
Hold a current General Construction Induction Training (White Card), where required
All prospective students will participate in a pre-qualification Interview to:
- Confirm eligibility for the upgrade pathway
- Identify equivalent units and any gap training requirements
- Ensure the qualification aligns with current job roles or licensing goals
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer
The upgrade pathway is primarily delivered through a combination of Recognition of Prior Leanring (RPL), Credit Transfer and gap assessment.
Credit Transfer will be applied to units that are deemed equivalent from your previous qualification.
For units that are not equivalent, students will be required to complete gap training and/or assessment to meet the requirements of the current qualification.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may also be applied where students can demonstrate relevant, current industry experience aligned with updated units.
This approach allows students to:
- Avoid duplication of training
- Focus only on new or updated competencies
- Complete the upgrade efficiently
- Gain formal recognition for existing skills and knowledge
Further information is available in the Fresh Start Education Student Handbook.
Course Structure
The Certificate IV upgrade pathway is tailored to each individual based on their previously completed qualification.
To be awarded the updated Certificate IV qualification, students must demonstrate competency in all required units as specified in the current training package.
Through the upgrade process:
- Equivalent units will be granted via Credit Transfer
- Non-equivalent units will be granted via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) when demonstrated
- Gap units (new or revised units) will be identified
- A customised Training Plan will outline only the required units to be completed
Training and assessment are conducted in accordance with the relevant training package and the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015.
Students must also meet any applicable industry or workplace requirements relevant to their trade.
Delivery Method
Upon finalisation of the RPL Assessment, students’ will be provided with a Training Plan outlining the units of competency to be trained and assessed. Training delivery is varied to suit the individual learner’s needs. Training may vary from online delivery, classroom based and/or one on one at your workplace. Training will be scheduled in collaboration with you prior to commencement.
